Disaster team on standby as rains lash city

Many parts of the city have been hit by floods. Butcher Road in Sydenham is severely flood and many homes in KwaMasha have been flooded and residents are being housed in the Community Hall.

ETHEKWINI Municipality has announced that its Disaster Management team is on standby and is monitoring water levels in the rivers and streams, following heavy rains that started on Sunday, causing flooding to homes and roads around the City.

According to a media release this evening, the most affected area is KwaMashu, where houses have been flooded and people have been accommodated in the local hall. Mayor James Nxumalo has advised residents to be cautious during this period.

“We advise community members to refrain from crossing low-lying bridges and to avoid streams. We are monitoring areas around the City that are prone to flooding.

The South African Weather Service has predicted that rains will continue until Tuesday, 26/07/2016, afternoon.
