Two injured as wall collapses in Florida Road

Two construction workers were injured when the boundary wall at Miami Blvd fell on them.

TWO workers were transported to King Edward Hospital after a boundary wall at Miami Blvd in Florida Road collapsed on them this afternoon (18 July).

According to the owner, Shaun Russouw, contractors were busy underpinning the boundary wall at the time.

“We are building a soundproof wall on the inside of the boundary wall, which is a heritage wall, to stop the sound from the business carrying while the business is operating. With the rain on Saturday night, the sand was softened and the wall collapsed,” he said.

He said two workers were injured, with one man’s arm being pinned under the wall, and the other’s leg pinned by the wall.

“Fortunately the sand was soft, so they weren’t injured as badly. They were taken to King Edward Hospital,” he said.

Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS said Sgt Trevor James from Berea SAPS responded and contacted the relevant authorities to attend the scene.

“Thankfully the men weren’t injured worse than they were. We appeal to the public that when they are doing construction and building trenches, safety must come first,” he said.
