Youth bring joy to the elderly

Urban Ignition youth programme makes a difference at Bill Buchanan.

FIFTY students from Urban Ignition arrived at Bill Buchanan in Morningside on Thursday to spread a little joy to more than 300 residents at the old age home.

The youth festival runs every year and has been going for six years. The volunteers from Grade 7 to matric come from different churches all over the country, to join other youth community service projects spanning four or five days.

The initiative was started by Brett Nixon-James from the Vineyard Church in Morningside. Students receive 20 hours community service points signed off by their respective schools for taking part in the programme.

Volunteers spent three days at Bill Buchanan, spending time with the pensioners, making hats with them and giving women in the frail care section manicures. On Saturday, the volunteers held a high tea for all the residents, where they got to wear their hats made during the week.

CEO Mr Fortune, said he was very grateful for the assistance offered and for the joy that this brought, especially to the frail residents of Emmerson House.
