Do your bit for Mandela Day, donate blood

SANBS urge residents to donate blood at Musgrave Donor Centre this Mandela Day.

THE global community will celebrate Mandela Day in July, a day in which citizens, the world over, are called on to give 67 minutes of their time to making a difference in the communities in which they live.

Nelson Mandela Day is a philanthropic occasion that challenges people the world over and reminds them that it is “time to serve” and not just on 18 July. The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is calling on the public to make a difference throughout the year by donating blood regularly.

“Although SANBS currently collects over one million units of blood annually at its 87 fixed donor centres, there are instances when we fall short of the 3000 units of blood required to meet daily demand and this greatly impacts on the lives of patients,” said Mohamed Chan Goolam, Public Relations Practitioner, for SANBS Durban.

He said currently the blood reserves are low this July and since it is Nelson Mandela Day, he hoped it would inspire the public to choose blood donations as their continued act of kindness.

“There is no better way to honour the life and spirit of a man who epitomised the precious value of life than to donate blood and save the lives of accident victims, mothers in labour, cancer patients and thousands others,” he said.

Show your support and join us at the Mandela Day Blood Drive at Musgrave Donor Centre, Pardy Gardens Road, off Musgrave Road, Durban from 8.30am to 4.30pm. Each donor will receive a token of appreciation.
