Historic colonial residence to be auctioned

A historic building in Cowey Road will go up for auction on 14 July.

AN HISTORIC Essenwood building at 183 Problem Mkhize (Cowey) Road, is up for sale by auction on 14 July.

The property is positioned at the corner of three roads, Problem Mkhize Road, Haden Road and Linden Road.

According to Scott McNair, business development executive from In2assets Property Specialists, the building, a typical colonial style residence with high ceilings, large verandahs and an exquisite garden is a heritage property.

“Although originally a residential home, the property has been converted for commercial use and is currently being used as a fine arts college. The building could also be used as offices and the setting would also lend itself to conversion to a boutique hotel or conference venue,” he said.

McNair said AMAFA approval will be required for any construction work carried out on site.

“I have had good interest in the auction so far. I am not sure of any definite plans for the property so far but potential buyers include a college, lawyers and various other business people,” he said.

The property sits on a large site of 2 475m² which is unique for the area and has excellent street frontage onto Cowey Road with ample off street parking accessed from the rear of the property.

According to the Title Deed, the property is a national monument and cannot be split up or leased, but must be utilised for a single use.

Ward councillor, Martin Meyer, said he hoped that the person who purchased the property would use it uplifting means and would respect the heritage of the building and the area.

The property goes under the hammer at 11am at The Durban Country Club, Isaiah Ntshangase Road, Durban, and Andrew Miller will be the auctioneer. Contact Scott McNair on 082 830 5208, 031 574 7600 or smcnair@in2assets.com
