Delville Wood memorial banner stolen from Tollgate bridge

A massive banner advertising the Delville Wood centenary memorial was stolen in a shocking theft from Tollgate Bridge on Tuesday.

AN ENORMOUS banner advertising the SA Legions commemoration of the centenary of the Battle of Delville Wood was stolen from the Tollgate bridge on Tuesday afternoon.

Johan Kruger, of the SA Legions in Durban said, “I can’t believe it, it was there on Monday night and only went up on Sunday evening. I went to see it on Monday and it was looking beautiful,”he said.

Kruger said the signage company who erected the large sign which is three metres tall by 12 metres wide went to check on the PVC banner and it was gone on Tuesday afternoon. The banner advertises the commemoration ceremony and has a picture of the Delville Wood memorial which is situated at the University of Cape Town as well as the venue and date of the event. The banner is believed to cost R18 000.

Kruger hoped the theft of the banner would not impact too much on public attending the important gathering to mark 100 years since the Battle of Delville Wood with a street parade and wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph on Sunday morning.
