Project to connect houses to sewers

A total of R1.5 million has been set aside to connect sewers to existing houses in Cato Crest.

TO avoid a high amount of pollution in the Cato Crest area, the Municipality’s Executive Committee (EXCO) has given the authority to advertise seven contracts to install the sewer wet core in existing houses in the area.

According to the tabled before EXCO on 29 June, some of the occupied houses do not have connections to the water borne sewer in the area. These houses have water connections and are currently using flush toilets.

In his budget speech delivered on 31 May, Mayor James Nxumalo said: “We must never again build houses without services no matter how pressing the circumstances may be.”

He said through this project, the Municipality seeks to address such challenges as some of the houses in the Cato Crest area were completed without the required infrastructure.

Chairperson of the Human Settlement and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Nigel Gumede, welcomed the move. The approximate time expected to complete the work on site is three months.
