Small pockets of sardines spotted

The KZN Sharks Board have reported that a small pocket of sardines was spotted near Coffee Bay.

THE KZN Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence (KZNSB) has eceived confirmed reports of a few very small pockets of sardines just to the north of Coffee Bay.

According to Head of Operations at KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board Maritime Centre of Excellence, Mike Anderson-Reade, this is about 145kms to the south of Port Edward.

“The reports were received from dive operators working out of Port St Johns and Coffee Bay. These very small pockets were accompanied by a few hundred Cape gannets, common dolphins and copper sharks and were consumed by these predators within an hour of being seen,” he said.

Anderson-Reade said there had been no further sightings on Tuesday but hopefully the sardine activity would increase after the cold front passes.

“At this time the outlook for a decent sardine run off the KZN coast for 2016 appears pretty bleak, however these fish are very unpredictable and this may change literally within a few hours,” he said.

All shark safety gear remains in place at the 37 protected beaches along the KZN coastline and the KZNSB will continue to monitor activity in the days ahead.
