Bechet pupils appear before tribunal

Five schoolgirls from Bechet Secondary appeared before the school governing body today, following the assault of a fellow pupil last month.

FIVE Bechet Secondary School pupils from Sydenham presented themselves at a tribunal today.

The girls, who were suspended from the school, appeared in front of the school governing body to tell their side of the story, after video footage emerged of them allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old fellow pupil, apparently over kissing a boy last month.

The pupil’s parents have filed a protection order and pressed charges against the girls. She has not returned to school since the incident where the five pupils ganged up on the the girl kicking her to the ground and hitting her repeatedly before a boy tried to intervene. The girl is going for counselling following the assault.

Reports state the parents are now waiting for the protection orders to be granted, and they will return to court on 6 July. The girl’s mother said she feels the girls should not only get a warning for what they did.

The KZN Department of Education’s Muzi Mahlambi said the Department is anticipating a heavy sanction as it does not see a different outcome on the matter.
