Relive your childhood at crazy hat fun walk

Enter Child Welfare Durban and District's Crazy Hats Fun Walk.

THE community is invited to enjoy a fun-filled morning at Child Welfare Durban and District's Crazy Hats Fun Walk on Saturday 9 July at 9am.

The walk, which is sponsored by Morris Fuller Williams, will start at North Beach Amphitheatre, with registration from 7.30am, and will be to Suncoast and back, a distance of 5km.

“We decided on the 'crazy hats' theme as people always hear dramatic stories of child abuse in society, and we aim to give childhood back to children. We want this event to be crazy, fun and playful, creating the impression of innocence and joy through this fun theme,” said Irene Okoye, income development manager.

Six Durban University of Technology second year PR students have been working on the event, as part of their requirements to put together a community engagement project.

The girls had to choose an NPO to approach, and put together a project with the organisation.

“We all like children and wanted to work with them and do something great for them, and as we live in the area, we decided to help put together this walk. We really want to give back to our community, and helping with this project has taught us humility, we're doing it because we understand their plight, and it is helping us to grow as individuals,” said Tachiana Atkins.

Alongside the walk, there will be activities for the children including a jumping castle, magic show, face painting, a bubble machine and games like musical chairs.

“The first 60 people to finish the walk will be given medals and there will be prizes for the most creative hat or outfit, so we encourage people to enter and come down in their most colourful outfits. The brighter the better!” said Irene.

Cost is R50 for adults, R30 for pensioners and R25 for children under 18. To enter, visit www.cwdd.org.za

You can email walk@cwdd.org.za or contact 031 312 9313.

There will be tickets for sale on the day.
