Berea SAPS encourages residents to aware of suspects posing as IEC officials.

iPhone thief caught in the act

Berea police arrested a 41-year-old man for theft of an iPhone in a Windermere store last Tuesday.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS, a woman was shopping when the incident occurred. She was pushing a trolley and had her handbag with her iPhone in it, over her shoulder. “While shopping she allegedly felt her handbag being pulled and as she turned back she noticed a man next to her with her cellphone in his hand. She called for help and the store manager came to her assistance and grabbed the suspect,” he explained.

Naidoo advised the community to be alert while shopping, “You could be followed and when opportunity presents itself, the suspect will strike.”

Beware of fake IEC officials

Lt PN Naidoo, of Berea SAPS encourages residents to aware of suspects posing as IEC officials. “It has come to our attention that people are going around to homes presenting themselves as IEC officials, trying to gain access into homes under the pretense of local election related information. Make sure before letting anyone on your premises,” he said.

Drunk driver fined R21 000

Berea SAPS Detective Warrant Officer VS Makhoba was the investigator in a drunk driving case. The accused was convicted and sentenced to a fine of R21 000 or ten months imprisonment suspended for five years. “We commend the good work by the detective to secure this sentence,” said Lt Naidoo.

Suspect arrested

Berea police arrested a man for theft after he was seen making off with a pressure hose from a resident's Mitchell Crescent yard.

“The suspect took the pressure hose and fled, but the resident called police who quickly responded, gave chase and caught the suspect in Seventh Avenue,” Naidoo said.
