Couple arrested for public indecency in park

Umbilo police encourage responsible and safe behaviour after a couple was arrested for public indecency at Bulwer Park over the weekend.

AN amorous couple were caught in flagrante delicto by Umbilo police in Bulwer Park on Sunday morning and arrested for public indecency.

According to Captain Pumzile Makaula, communications officer at Umbilo SAPS, officers were on patrol on Bulwer Road at around 2.30am, when they noticed a vehicle parked at Bulwer Park. “When the officers went to enquire why the vehicle was parked in the park at that hour, there was no one in the driver’s seat, but noticed a naked couple in the back seat of the vehicle,” she said.

The man and woman hurriedly dressed and were then arrested by the officers. “We want to send a strong message to the residents of the Umbilo policing area, warning people against acts of public indecency because you will be arrested. This is also a very dangerous security risk for you and your significant other as you put yourself in direct risk of hijackings and other vehicle related crimes,” she said.

In other news from Umbilo, a woman was killed after a botched hijacking on Che Guevara (Moore) Road, a short distance from the park last Saturday.

According to Makaula, the woman’s boyfriend was allegedly dropping her off on Che Guevara Road when the incident occurred. “As they were seated in the car, they heard a knock on the door and two men approached them. One suspect told the driver to get out as he wanted to speak to him. The driver allegedly pressed the panic button for his tracking device and tried to drive off. As he drove the suspect started shooting at the vehicle. The driver headed to a nearby service station on Che Guevara Road to ask for assistance as his girlfriend had been shot. He wasn’t from the area so needed directions to the nearest hospital,” she explained.

The couple were driven by a good Samaritan in the victim’s silver Polo to King Edward hospital. Sadly, the woman was declared dead on arrival. Makaula encouraged motorists to comply if confronted by criminals.

“We can’t over emphasis how important is is to take extra security measures to avoid hijackings and thefts of motor vehicles when driving, at robots or entering or exiting your home,” she added.
