Young scientist gets invite to prestige meeting

A UKZN PhD student is to join Nobel Laureates at a prestigious meeting this month.

A UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal Physics PhD student, Sphumelele Ndlovu, is honoured to be among a select number of young scientists chosen to take part in a prestigious meeting of some of the world’s prominent academics.

He is among a group of five top young South African scientists nominated by the Academy of Science of South Africa, who will attend the 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting from 26 June to 1 July 2016, in Lindau, Germany, along with Nobel Laureates in the fields of physiology and medicine, physics, and chemistry.

Only the 402 most qualified young scientists can be given the opportunity to experience the unique atmosphere of the Lindau Nobel Laureate meetings.

The ecstatic recipient said: “I believe that this will be an excellent opportunity to gain inspiration for my current work and for my research career in the future. I think that scientific exchange between different disciplines, regions of the world and generations is vital for meaningful and productive scientific research.”

UKZN spokesperson, Lesiba Seshoka, said: “We are delighted to see that Sphumelele has been given an opportunity to meet with scientists that are at the cutting edge of scientific discovery. It will be an inspiring experience and an outstanding achievement just to be selected to join other young scientists.”
