UPDATE: Morningside shooting suspect on the run

A bakery owner was accosted by a group of armed men shortly before the shooting in Morningside this morning.

POLICE have confirmed the owner of a Morningside bakery was accosted by a gang of armed men this morning.

According to provincial police spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Shooz Magudulela, at around 7am this owner of the bakery arrived at his Woodford Grove premises when he was accosted in his car by three armed men.

“The suspects robbed him of approximately R16 000 cash. Members of the Durban rapid response policing unit, who were nearby, noticed what was happening and responded. The suspects shot at the officers who returned fire wounding two of the suspects,” he explained.

Magudulela said one suspect was shot in the buttocks and the other in the hip, before they were arrested and transported for medical assistance.

“There were no injuries to the officers. Two pistols and various live rounds were recovered at the scene. The third suspect managed to flee and is believed to be on the run from police,” he added.

Magudulela said investigations into the armed robbery are continuing and commended the “outstanding work” by the officers involved.
