UPDATE: Community rally to aid stabbed domestic worker

Musgrave community came to the aid of a domestic worker after she was was stabbed in an alleged home invasion on Vause Road this afternoon.

EMERGENCY Services have confirmed that the Musgrave domestic worker who was stabbed multiple times in a housebreaking this afternoon is in a serious condition in a Durban hospital.

Kevin Dunkley, a community activist and co-founder of Save Our Berea, said he was about to leave his Windmill Road home and had reversed out of his property when he noticed a commotion three doors away. “I was just leaving when I saw a whole lot of guys, security and people working in the area, shouting and running after someone with sticks. I heard that a woman had been stabbed and they were trying to get the guy, so I went back home fetched my gun and went to help. I phoned emergency services and within minutes, everybody started to arrive. There were at least six police units and a few ambulances,” he said.

Dunkley said he was amazed by how the community rallied around and came together to assist. “It is amazing to see that the community is starting to look after each other. It is definitely a strong message to criminals, to know that they will get chased down by community members. The community spirit was really good, one man actually climbed over the wall of the property to get to the traumatised woman and ensure that she was safe and reassure her help was on the way. He was the unnamed hero, who stayed with her and spoke to me over the wall, sending a description of the suspect. The community left what they were doing to ensure he didn’t get away,” he added.

Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson said paramedics were called to the scene of an apparent house invasion on Vause Road around 1pm on Tuesday. “Paramedics found a woman in her forties had been stabbed multiple times. Advanced life support paramedics stabilised her before rushing her through to hospital,” he said.

A police source on scene said the woman had suffered stab wounds on both arms and her chest. The suspect originally chased, caught and arrested had to be released due to a lack of evidence.
