Beer bottles were flung before Florida Road shooting

Police believe the Florida Road was attributed to a fight between two groups at a popular restaurant.

POLICE confirmed that charges of murder and attempted murder have been opened for investigation by Berea SAPS in the Morningside shooting outside a popular Florida Road  restaurant.
According to KZN provincial police spokeswoman, Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala, two groups were involved in a fight inside one of the restaurants on Florida Road in the early hours of Saturday morning.

“They threw beer bottles at each other. Gunshots were also fired and one of the suspects pointed a firearm at an off-duty police officer who was in the restaurant and a 32-year-old suspect was fatally shot,” she said.
Gwala said four suspects aged between 20 and 36 were arrested and charged with murder and four firearms were also seized from the suspects who will appear in court soon.

Meanwhile ward councillor for the area, Martin Meyer described the night as “a terrible night in the ward crime wise.” “The shooting in Florida Road, and a few reports of hijackings are some of the crimes reported last night.

Councillor Martin Meyer

“Fighting crime is best done when communities stand together with the police to protect our homes and our communities.
This process was started by Save Our Berea when they held their meeting on crime, but now it is time to take this to the next level,” the concerned councillor said.
Meyer said he would engage with Paul Antao, CPF chair and Colonel Xulu from Berea SAPS to call for a CPF meeting so the community could put practical measures in place to make the area safer. “I will also ask Parks and other city departments to be present at this meeting as their cooperation is required to make our community safer,” he added.
