Atlas Scrap clean up

Atlas Scrap staff got stuck in cleaning up Congella Park on Tuesday.

ATLAS Scrap, in partnership with Durban Solid Waste, spent time cleaning up Congella Park on Tuesday morning.

According to Max Bega from Atlas, the group is committed to regularly cleaning up the park as it is in its area.

“Coming to work and driving past this slum of muck and dirt, it’s not a good start to the day. We want to keep the area clean and do our bit,” he said.

Bega said he felt security was needed in the park to discourage vagrants.

“The park really looks bad. I’ve heard hundreds of men sleep in the park at night. The guys selling wet cardboard are also a big problem as the cardboard flows from the bottom pond into the drains and clogs them, which leads to overflowing drains in the area,” he said.

Mduduzi Zwane from Durban Solid Waste was pleased that a private company was committed to helping clean the park.

“We have brought 20 of our staff to help clean up the road outside the park as well. I feel Parks should have people based in the park to monitor it, and to clean up. It should be double checked during the day that work is done in the park,” he said.
