Rapist sentenced to 50 years

A man was found guilty of rape and robbery and sentenced in court last week.

THE Durban Regional Court convicted and sentenced Sinikelo Ismail Dubazane, (29), to a total of 50 years’ imprisonment for two counts of rape and two counts of robbery for crimes he committed in December 2011 and July 2012.

Dubazane accosted a 33-year-old woman at her home in Morningside, raped her and robbed her of her belongings at knife-point before fleeing. In July 2012, he also raped a 56-year-old woman at her home while threatening to kill her and robbed her of her belongings at knife-point.

Cases of rape and house robbery were opened at Mayville Police Station and were transferred to Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation. The investigating officer managed to track and trace the accused after he had been arrested for numerous cases of housebreaking in the area. In 2014, he was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for each housebreaking case.

The investigating officer arrested him and charged him for these rape and robbery cases. He was linked to both rapes through DNA samples and an identification parade. He was sentenced to 15 years for each rape, 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances and five years for another robbery.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Brighton Beach FCS detectives in their diligence to solve the cases and to put the accused behind bars.
