Brettonwood celebrates 50 years

Brettonwood High School recently hosted a reunion dinner to commemorate its 50th anniversary.

BRETTONWOOD High School celebrated its 50th anniversary reunion dinner recently.

The dinner was attended by 150 past pupils and teachers. The school was established in 1966 and served the predominantly working class community of Umbilo. The school has a proud history of diversity, academic attainment and a values-based ethos.

Brettonwood has proven to be a school which embraces cultural diversity as it was the first high school in Durban to implement transformation. In 1974 the first girls walked through the gates and in 1991 the school took a stand against segregation by enrolling equal numbers of white learners and learners from other race groups.

Brettonwood's motto is “Audacior” meaning “daring”. This is apt for Brettonwood as the school has always aimed to produce learners who engage in their learning and dare to rise above circumstances to develop as citizens of the world.
