Firearm recovered

BEREA police arrest a suspect for possession of an unlicenced firearm and ammunition outside DUT's Steve Biko campus on Friday afternoon.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS, around 2.30pm police were called to a complaint in Steve Biko Road.

The man had allegedly been aggressive and pulled a firearm on a guard who did not let him into the campus parking lot. “When Captain Kevin Stephen and the crime prevention team arrived at the scene the suspect was pointed out. Captain Stephen approached the suspect and he denied having a firearm, however with the help of campus security, they searched him and found him in possession of an unlicenced firearm hidden in his crotch area,” explained Naidoo.

The 30 year old suspect was arrested and detained at Berea SAPS on charges of being in possession of a firearm without a licence, pointing of a firearm and for being in possession of ammunition. A Browning firearm and 25 live rounds were recovered.

Crime Awareness Day

Berea SAPS will host its annual Crime Awareness Day this Saturday, 16 April from 9am to 5pm at Berea Park (Essenwood). “The community is welcome to come share the day with us. We have lots of activities and entertainment besides security government departments and security companies with demonstrations. Together we stand, divided we fall, so lets win this war against crime,” added Naidoo.

Teens arrested

Berea police are on high alert because of an increase of property crimes in the Berea area and have increased patrols.

“All suspicious people are being searched and if you are caught you will be arrested. Two suspects, one in Currie Road and one in Musgrave Road, were arrested for possession of dagga on Saturday and another for driving under the influence of alcohol in Windermere Road,” said Lieutenant PN Naidoo.

The suspects aged 18 and 19 years old were charged for possession of dagga and appeared in court on Monday.
