DHS celebrates anniversary with hockey festival

Twelve school hockey teams gathered for a festival to celebrate DHS's 150 anniversary year.

DURBAN High School hosted a three-day hockey festival at the Riverside Sports club recently, which saw 12 schools including DHS, play matches in celebration of DHS’s 150th birthday year.

Hockey has a long-standing history at DHS. According to Wendy Snelling, Debbie Bromham and Jeremy Oddy, with “pooled” recollections of Christopher Harris and Keith McIver, the first recorded hockey game was played at DHS in 1913. There were 12 inter-house games during the course of the year, of which the Boarders won seven.

The first recorded school game can be found in June 1914, [No. 3] School Magazine Edition. A team went to Umzinto and, after and extra half, DHS won 6-3. Recorded to date, there have been 125 DHS boys representing KZN Schools, 21 boys representing SA Schools and 13 SA International Hockey Representatives.

Overall, the festival was a success.
