Mayville SAPS launch youth desk

YOUNG poeple from the Mayville and surrounding areas attended the launch of the Mayville SAPS Youth Desk at Westridge Tennis Stadium last week.

According to Mayville SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer, PZ Ngwane, the whole inspiration behind the event was to mobilise young people to form part of the crime prevention structure.

Present at the event were Ethekwini Youth Desk cluster secretary, Siyanda Salute Biyela, ViSPOL Commander, Captain ZA Essop, CPF deputy Chairperson, Donald Steed, SAPS Mayville Youth Desk coordinator Constable Thobe Khoza and Sector Commander Sergeant BP Sikhumba were honoured speakers at the event.

Detective commended for securing good carjacking conviction

A SAPS Mayville detective was commended recently for his excellent work in securing a good conviction for a youth accused of car jacking.

According to Mayville SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer PZ Ngwane, 19-year-old Sizwe Goge, who appeared at Durban Magistrate Court was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for carjacking, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“The victim was seated in his vehicle waiting for his girlfriend at Jan Smuts Highway when he was suddenly approached by the accused who was armed. He threatened the victim with a firearm and while the victim was running away, the accused fired a shot towards the victim. The accused then took the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene,” explained Ngwane.

The Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel WB Luthuli commended detective Warrant Officer Pierre Hay for the manner in which he conducted his investigation that led to the conviction.

“This conviction will serve as a strong warning to the perpetrators of crime that crime does not pay,” added Ngwane.
