City investigates threats against contractors

eThekwini Mayors orders an investigation into further threats and intimidation of contractors.

EThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo has reassured residents that measures were being taken to investigate alleged threats against contractors as well as protests experienced recently throughout the City.

Nxumalo said he had assigned the Deputy Head of the Mayor’s Office to compile a report regarding the latest incidents of alleged intimidation by Delangokubona as well as protests experienced in the City, particularly those in the Umlazi area. He said this report would be presented to the Executive Committee and would present a way forward.

A letter was handed to Nxumalo during the Executive Committee meeting on Wednesday in which a construction company alleged the Delangokubona had intimidated staff and prevented them from doing work since last week.
Nxumalo said the allegations would be investigated as the city had been assured that the group would not disrupt services in the City as a tactic to voice their concerns.

“They have given us assurances that they will use the City’s formal processes to raise their concerns. The report will indicate the best approach to take as a City on this issue as well as that of protests,” he said.
