Full-time security in place, says DHS head

DHS says pupils waiting outside the school are not in danger, following reports of a mugging of one of its pupils.

DURBAN High School’s headmaster said the school is deeply concerned about reports of crimes committed in its neighbourhood.

Leon Erasmus was responding to a report in last week’s Berea Mail about school pupils who have been mugged in recent weeks. “Our main concern is that recent reports give the impression that learners waiting outside for lifts are in danger and that the school itself is also vulnerable to crime. We would like to reassure both pupils, parents and the staff at the school that an extensive 24 hour security service is in place to ensure that the school premises are safe,” he said.

Erasmus said that the school only knew of one pupil who had been involved in an unfortunate incident recently. However, staff regularly encourage their pupils to be vigilant and to take all necessary steps to ensure their safety should they be walking to and from school or local shopping centres not only on school days, but on an everyday basis.
