Public meeting called to address Clairwood development
Residents state they do not want more trucking in the area, and will meet to discuss the proposed logistics park at the Clairwood Racecourse site.
A MASS public gathering by the communities of Merebank, Wentworth, Bluff, Isipingo, Umlazi and Lamontville has been called to discuss the Clairwood racecourse development that organisers of the gathering believe will negatively affect thousands of people daily.
MEC Mr Mike Mabuyakhulu and Mr Nico Prinsloo from Capital Property Fund have been invited to address the public on their concerns around the development and the decisions that they have made.
The meeting will take place on 2 March at the Merebank Community Centre Hall at 6pm.
“We urge all residents to attend this public meeting to collectively unite and hear what the MEC and Capital Property Fund have to say about the destruction of our Clairwood Racecourse,” said Des D’Sa from the South Durban Community Environmental
Alliance.
He said south Durban residents are mourning the loss of the Clairwood Racecourse and believe the development of a logistics park and trucking facility is ‘unacceptable’.
“We feel that the decision that was made by the MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu disregarded the concerns of the people that it will affect negatively. The reason people are up in arms about this is because residents of South Durban are already plagued by a plethora of industrial activity. The area has become Durban’s dustbin. More polluting industrial developments will intensify existing social and health issues, as well as high pollution levels,” he said.
