Transet fulfill’s Mandela’s legacy

TRANSNET Port Terminals (TPT) haspartnered with The Nelson Mandela Foundation in the launch of their second ‘Shoes on Feet’ initiative, which was started in 2014 as a tribute to Madiba after his death.

TPT staff collected much needed school shoes for underprivileged schools across the country over the period of a month. The shoes were recently collected to be handed over to the schools and their pupils at the start of the new school year.

According to TPT’s Karl Socikwa, the company started this campaign as a tribute to SA’s former president.

“We understand the importance of reaching out to communities in need and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate. That’s why our partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation this year is so important in formalising this initiative and further encouraging our staff to remember Madiba and live his legacy. Last year our staff from all over the country collected and donated thousands of school shoes and this year we plan on surpassing this number substantially to help even more children,” said Socikwa.

The shoes will be donated to pre-selected underprivileged schools in KZN, Eastern Cape and the Western Cape where TPT has operations, with two NGOs supported by the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Gauteng also being identified as recipients of the collection.

“We believe this is a truly worthy initiative that will bring much hope to the start of the new school year for the children of these schools who lack even the most basic school essentials. Giving back to communities and feeding into the spirit of Ubuntu, as TPT are demonstrating through this initiative, is exactly the type of legacy that we are encouraging all South Africans to try live by – and not only on one day of the year during Mandela Day, but 365 days a year,” Yase Godlo, manager of Mandela Day from the Nelson Mandela Foundation said.
