DUT student’s tragic death

The sudden loss of a DUT student who jumped to his death on Friday night left flatmates traumatised.

POLICE have opened an inquest docket after a 21-year-old, first-year DUT student fell to his death from the sixth floor of his Berea Road residence on Friday night, 12 February.

According to Alan Khan, senior director of corporate affairs at the Durban University of Technology, Lindelani Godslove Myeza, who was living in the Persada Residence on the Berea in Durban, was a first-year student in the University’s management sciences faculty. He was already registered and entered residence last Tuesday, 9 February 2016. “The university is assisting his family at this difficult time,” Khan added.

While Khan could not comment on rumours that the student may have taken his life after learning he was denied financial aid, he did confirm that police had launched an investigation into the matter. “I am sure that you will join me in expressing our deepest condolences and sympathies to his family and friends,” he said.

A flatmate of Myeza’s expressed her grief on social media. “RIP to a good friend of mine, Lindelani Godslove Myeza, life is too short. You will be missed.” The student added that it was ‘very sad and traumatising for us who saw everything’.

Major Thulani Zwane, provincial police spokesman, confirmed that an inquest docket was opened at Durban Central Police Station. “The motive is unknown at this stage,” he added.
