Truck driver killed, two injured in multiple vehicle highway crash

A truck driver lost his life in a major multiple vehicle crash on the M7 under the N2 bridge.

A TRUCK driver was killed and two people were moderately injured when two trucks and a car collided on the M7 east-bound under the N2 bridge this morning.

According to Garrith Jamieson, operations director at Rescue Care, paramedics arrived on the scene to find that two trucks and a car had collided in the intersection before one of the trucks caught alight, resulting in both trucks catching alight and burning.

“The Fire Department and SAPS Search and Rescue Unit were called to assist. Once the Fire Department had extinguished the fire, paramedics and rescue officials were able to gain entry to one of the truck drivers who was trapped in the wreckage. Unfortunately he had sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene,” he explained.

The other truck driver and driver of the car were stabilised on the scene by paramedics before they were taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

Jamieson said at this stage it is unclear what caused the collision, however added that the Durban Accident Combating Unit was on the scene and will be investigating further.

Traffic was severely affected as the M7 was closed while emergency personnel worked to clear the scene.
