Granddad arrested after toddler left in car in Florida Road

The grandfather of a toddler was arrested in Florida Road on Saturday after leaving the child alone in a vehicle for nearly three hours.

A DURBAN man was arrested by Berea police on Saturday night for contravening the Child Care Act.

According to a Berea police source, the man had left his 18-month-old grandson unattended in a car on Florida Road while he dined at a popular restaurant. Witnesses allege the child was left unattended for nearly three hours with the rear windows only slightly opened and that the grandfather had returned smelling of alcohol.

“When the child cried, he got the attention of shocked onlookers who called 10111. Berea police attended the scene and arrested the man,” the source said.

Captain TD Gumede, communications officer at Berea SAPS, confirmed the incident.
