Tremor originated off uMhlanga shore

The Council for Geoscience confirmed that the tremor measured 3.8 on the Richter scale.

EXPERTS at the Council for Geoscience have not only confirmed that the tremor that rocked through the city on Saturday was measured at 3.8 on the Richter scale, but also stated that it originated off the coast of uMhlanga.

The tremor, which occurred at around 11.30am on Saturday morning, was experienced as far as Margate, Richard’s Bay and Pietermaritzburg.

However, according to Michelle Grobbelaar, project manager at the Council for Geoscience, most of the intensity of the quake had dissolved by the time the seismic waves reached the shore.

Grobbelaar said that is was a ‘natural event’ caused by stresses built up within the the earth crust, which were released from a weakness in the crust.

Thousands of shaken Durbanites turned to social media to share their experiences with family and friends hours after the quake hit.

The hashtag – #durbantremor – is now trending.

On the local front, Crisis Medical’s Kyle van Reenen said there have been no injuries.

Authorities also confirmed that there was no damage reported.
