Car monitor project launched

Point SAPS and Sector one launched the latest car monitor project in Durban.

POINT SAPS and its partners launched the Sector 1 car monitor project in Durban last week.

Speaking at the event, Col John Romer, station commissioner at Point SAPS, said launching the project, which was the brainchild of the late W/O Dennis from the station, mattered to the station and it was imperative to get it started.

Romer said the people who lived in and worked in the Sector one patrol area were important to him and needed to be protected. Addressing the car monitors he said: “You will be operating as car monitors as well as informants, you are always on the street, watching over people’s possessions, and seeing criminal activities in action. You are now to give any information about crime to the officers at the station. Your duties have been extended to crime fighters. We applaud you and are giving you this chance to become closer to Point SAPS and the community. It’s not for the money but for our country. We have to keep the integrity of our country together. If this project could be implemented all over the country, it could turn South Africa into the most beautiful and crime free country in the world,” he said.

Point CPF chairman, Vuyani Msomi, congratulated the Sector for being able to launch this project, in honour of W/O Dennis, as it was his wish and dream to make Sector one a crime free and better sector.

Sector one chairperson, Shaun Barrett, said the main point of this project was for it to be a success.

“Do the job and have pride in what you are doing. We expect everyone to adhere to the code of conduct and to be neat, tidy, and respectable to people. You are representing the station and the community,” he said.

Barrett said Metro Police would also be involved in the project, and would be removing illegal guards, not wearing the official bibs, which were sponsored by Robbie de Billot from Engen, and handed to the car monitors.
