Life sentence and 12 years for would-be exorcists

Four people have been convicted for the murder of a 14-year-old girl who they said had been possessed by demons.

THE Durban High Court has convicted and sentenced four would-be exorcists, to life imprisonment and 12 years imprisonment on 22 January.

Fundiswa Faku (30) and Lindelwa Jalubane (38) were both sentenced to life imprisonment. Nokubonga Jalubane (19) and Minenhle Jalubane (20) were sentenced to 12 years. This conviction and sentencing follows a murder case that happened on 3 March 2012, where Sinethemba Dlamini (14) was attacked by the four for allegedly being possessed by demons. Fundiswa Faku had arranged a special prayer meeting in order to exorcise demons out of the deceased in uMlazi. The accused removed the deceased’s internal organs while she was still alive.

“We are happy about the sentence handed down as this type of crime was rather unusual. A well prepared docket was presented to court and this saw a successful conviction,” said KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
