SAPS operations reel in 40 illegal firearms

More than 40 illegal firearms were recovered by SAPS in a week-long operation this month.

OPERATIONS to remove all illegal firearms from the hands of criminals continue to yield excellent results in the Kwa-Zulu Natal, SAPS said on Monday.

MAjor Thulani Zwane sid the results of these operations were prolific as 41 unlicensed firearms were recovered in a one week operation. “The operations were carried out from 16 to 23 January 2016 in all KZN Clusters. During these operations a total of 41 unlicensed firearms were confiscated, which included, 31 pistols, four homemade, two shot guns, four rifles and 208 live rounds of ammunition,” he explained.

Zwane said a total of 46 suspects were charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and they appeared in the various magistrates’ courts around the province.

“We will not rest until we recover all the illegal firearms in our province. We are warning all those who possess illegal firearms to surrender them to their local police stations,” said KZN’s police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
