Joint operation to clean up Whoonga Park

A joint operation by police and social departments netted 67 drug related offenders at Albert Park on Friday.

SAPS, Metro Police, the Department of Social Welfare and Department of Health conducted an operation to clean up an area of Albert Park, commonly known as “Woonga Park,” on Friday, 15 January.

According to Constable Zanele Khomo, of Durban Central SAPS, 67 suspects between the ages of 20 and 40 were arrested for different drug related crimes which included possession of dagga, possession of heroin and whoonga.

All suspects were charged and appeared in court on Monday. Khomo added that some suspects were positively identified in other drug related offences on the police morph touch system.

“Those who were not arrested asked to be taken to rehabilitation centres for help. Some people were united with their relatives. This operation will take place regularly since the Albert Park area is known for crimes such as robberies and theft,” she added.
