Durban teen protects family from armed robber

An armed robber got more than he bargained for at a home in Botanic Gardens Avenue after he was shot before fleeing the home on Saturday night.

AN armed robber got more than he bargained for while trying to rob a Berea home on Saturday night when the victims surprised his accomplices and fought back, shooting one of the alleged robbers.

Reports of the “redalert” incident shocked social media late on Saturday night when reports came of the house robbery where it alleged a young male victim was chopped on the head with a sword, a female victim was stabbed in the stomach and a second female victim had shot one of the suspects, who all fled. The alert called for the public to contact police if they saw the gunshot wounded suspect.

Meanwhile provincial spokesperson, Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala, confirmed the house robbery on Saturday, 9 January at about 7.40pm, saying three unknown men, armed with a knife and firearms, stormed into a house in Botanic Gardens Avenue.

“One family member was stabbed by one of the men who managed to steal a handbag as well as a cellphone. The victim tried to shoot the suspects but they fled in their getaway vehicle. The victim was taken for medical attention,” explained Gwala.

A case of house robbery was opened at Berea police station. No arrests have been made at this stage of investigations.
