Five rescued in CBD blaze

Three fireman were taken to hospital after fighting a fire which broke out on the 8th floor of a building in Field Street.

A fire which ripped through the 8th floor of a building in Joe Slovo Road in the Durban CBD just after 7.30pm on New Year’s Eve has left eight people injured, including three firemen.

Rescue Care, SAPS Search and Rescue, Durban Fire Department, Durban Metro Police and SAPS responded to numerous calls of a building on fire.  Paramedics found the 8th floor of a building well alight.  Five people, who had been trapped in the building, were rescued by the Fire Department and SAPS Search and Rescue unit. All five had sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Three firemen also sustained injuries whilst fighting the fire and were stabilized on the scene before being transported to hospital.

At this stage it is unknown what caused the fire.
