Water crisis forces city to reduce consumption

Water restrictions remain in place as the city appeals to residents to reduce consumption.

WHILE thousands of holidaymakers have been welcomed to the City, the water crisis remains a concern.

eThekwini Municipality today released another media statement urging residents and visitors alike to use water sparingly as the province finds itself in the clutches of a severe drought.

A continuous awareness campaign has been carried out throughout the festive season with City officials visiting beaches and engaging with commuters in trains and at bus stations to raise awareness of the drought and provide tips on reducing their water consumption.

The City is appealing to all residents and visitors to further reduce their water consumption. Domestic, commercial and industrial consumption is to be reduced by 50 percent in the Northern areas and 15 percent of normal consumption in the rest of the City.

The following simple water-saving tips can help save water:

• Fix leaking taps immediately as a dripping tap wastes up to 76 litres of water. A bucket can be placed under the tap until it is fixed. The collected water can be used for other purposes;

• Use a bucket to collect water from the shower while you’re waiting for the water to warm up;

• Reuse water. Grey water (water used for another household purpose that can be reused) can be used for a number of purposed such as watering the garden;

• Turning off the tap when you are brushing your teeth can save up to six litres of water per minute and;

• Don’t flush the toilet unnecessarily as the toilet uses about six litres of water every time you flush.
