NSRI warns of strong rip currents
Strong rip currents continue to be of concern along coastal beaches.
THE National Sea Rescue Institute continues to urge extreme public caution around the coast as higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides bring with them stronger than normal rip currents which are being experienced along the coastline after the full moon last week.
At 10am on Sunday, 27 December, NSRI Durban duty crew prepared to launch a sea rescue craft following a request for assistance from the wife of a skipper aboard a Hobie-cat reporting her husband and 2 crew in difficulty off-shore of Vetches Bay.
The Hobie-Cat had been damaged while they were sailing. However, prior to NSRI arriving they managed to get to shore and required no further assistance.
On Wednesday, 23rd December, NSRI Durban duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer and Megan II to assist a charter boat adrift in the harbour suffering motor mechanical failure.
Aall passengers had already been taken off the charter boat by another boat and NSRI towed the boat to a safe mooring without incident.
