Appeal made to get ill woman home to Holland

Sabina Badenhost, a Dutch woman who married and settled in Durban, is fighting for her life at Addington Hospital while her family try to raise funds to get her back to Holland for more specialised treatment.

A DUTCH woman, Sabina Badenhorst, is fighting for her life at a Durban government hospital while her family tries to raise funds to get her home for more specialised treatment.

Badenhorst’s sister, Sarah Roe, is urging communities around the world to assist her and her family in getting her sister home to Holland as she does not have medical aid and is currently undergoing treatment at Addington Hospital.

Roe has turned to YouCaring.Com, a compassionate crowd-funding website, where she is trying to raise the €100 000 it will cost to get Sabina back to Holland.

In September, my little sister Sabina flew to South Africa with four suitcases, a wedding dress and a heart full of hopes and dreams. She would marry her David. She would build a future in the country she loved. And when the time was right, she would set up her dream project: a home for disabled children. After she landed she had one month of glorious happiness. But then the pains began – explained Roe.

What started with gallstones in Sabina’s common bile duct developed into a life-threatening, flesh-eating disease, necrotising fasciitis. A team of young surgeons fought the infection in a series of operations until they achieved control, with Sabina being Durban’s first survivor. “But conditions in the government hospitals in South Africa are poor. And although the ICU has a higher standard of care, the risk of infection is immense. Sabina contracted a multi-drug-resistant hospital bacteria that has pulled her back into septic shock again and again,” added Roe.

According to Roe, the doctors and Sabina’s family have all agreed she would get better care in her home country, Holland. “But while she’s abroad Sabina is not insured. The repatriation has to be funded privately. Help us carry our Bini home,” she appealed.
