DA announces KZN mayoral candidates

The DA announced its KZN mayoral candidates at a function in Durban on Monday.

THE Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal announced its three mayoral candidates who will contest next year’s local government elections in 2016.

The candidates are Haniff Hoosen, MP, who will stand for the eThekwini mayoral position, Mergan Chetty, MPL, for uMsunduzi, and Councillor Pam Passmoor for Umngeni.

The candidates addressed the media at a function held at the new DA provincial head office on Monday night at Springfield Park in Durban.

Haniff Hoosen is a member of parliament for the Democratic Alliance serving in the National Assembly. He has served as a member of parliament for a decade and also served as a councillor in the eThekwini Municipality for just under a decade.

Speaking at the function, he said: “In a few weeks, I will reveal the DA’s plans to turn around this city and make Durban the leading city in Africa. I will do so at a launch of the Mayoral Campaign early in the new year. Our plan will not be just be a list of political promises but a practical and achievable list of objectives, which if implemented with courage, will turn our city around to become the leading city in Africa in many respects.”

“If we want to build one City, then we will have to undo the legacy of apartheid spatial development and unify communities through integrated commercial hubs and transport infrastructure,” he said.

He said the most recent Municipal Services and Living Conditions Survey (quality of life survey) reveals that only 33 per cent of people living in the city are satisfied with the performance of the municipality as far as service delivery is concerned. He plans to turn this around.
