Join the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust

The Durban Botanic Gardens Trust is calling for nominations and applications to join its Board of Trustees.

THE Durban Botanic Gardens is currently Africa’s oldest surviving botanic garden and remains a national and local City asset actively contributing to plant conservation and plant-based education.

The Trust, which supports the Gardens key strategic areas in biodiversity, education, heritage, research, horticultural excellence and green innovation, is looking for people to join its Board of Trustees.

The vision of the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust includes helping to develop the Durban Botanic Gardens as a Centre of Excellence for all as part of becoming Africa’s most innovative botanic garden through celebrating the vital link between people, plants and culture. The Trust was established in 1993 for the purpose of fundraising and supporting the Durban Botanic Gardens and has over the years made a significant contribution by raising substantial funds for major development programmes and projects in the Gardens.

Trustees do not receive any direct remuneration for their services and perform services on a purely voluntary basis.

Prospective trustees will be expected to contribute actively to the work of the Trust, fulfil the fiduciary responsibilities of the Trust, attend quarterly and other meetings and actively promote the work of the Trust within their own networks where possible, thus enabling the Trust to achieve its goals.

The Trust is looking for people with strategic vision, independent judgment and a willingness to give time and commitment to being a trustee. It is particularly interested in hearing from people with experience and a proven track record in fundraising, financial management, marketing and communications (experience in the use of social media), botany and horticulture, community development, outreach, education and creative arts, research, writing and publishing.

For more information or an informal discussion on the role of being a trustee or should you wish to request an application form, contact Kerry Phillips on marketing@dbgt.org.za or 031 309 924. Closing date is 30 December.
