Lack of maintenance angers residents

Kenneth Gardens residents are angered by the lack of maintenance at the housing estate.

RESIDENTS at Kenneth Gardens in Umbilo have appealed to the Parks Department to urgently cut the grass in the housing estate.

Resident Keith William, said the grass at Kenneth Gardens hadn't been cut since around July.

“It is silly as during winter when it is dry and the grass is not growing, the grass was cut every two weeks. Now with all the rain, it is overgrown and nothing is done about it. We were told someone would cut on 20 November, but nothing has happened,” he said.

He said due to the heat and water restrictions, the residents were concerned that the long grass would encourage snakes.

“There are many children who play outside and we are concerned that they could encounter a snake. We don't need any fatalities of this sort in a community like ours. Many of the parents don't have any form of transport and to wait for an ambulance when faced with your child dying in your arms due to no fault of the child would be terrible,” he said.

Williams said this should be on the conscience of the maintenance department. He said the department did not appear to know how to budget sufficient money to keep the garden service going.

“We want the municipality to keep our complex tidy, like the one in Stamford Hill Road and many other complexes that the Department of Housing owns. Kenneth Gardens seems to be the last thing on their priority list,” he said.

Williams said he had written to the Housing Department but was waiting on a response.

Ward councillor Nicole Graham said she had approached the Housing Department regarding the progress, and was told the matter would be attended to.
