Matric markers move to Durban school

The Department of Education has moved teachers marking matric papers in Ulundi to Durban after teachers downed their pens because of poor working conditions.

GEORGE Campbell Technical School in Durban has hastily become the new venue for teachers marking matric papers. The Department of Education has had to move the teachers who were marking matric papers at the James Nxumalo Agricultural High School in Ulundi after they downed their marking pens because of dire water shortages.

According to media reports teachers complained that conditions were so bad that female teachers were using the nearby bush as a toilet.

Department of Education’s spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi told the media that a decsion had been made to move the marking centre to Durban rather than waiting for the local municipality to fix the problem and provide more water tanks. He said teachers would be accommodated at a Point district hotel and would mark papers at George Campbell Technical School.

He said the marking schedule would stay on track.
