Seven life sentences for sex offenders

KwaZulu-Natal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit achieved seven life sentences in the month of October.

DURBAN'S courts have taken a hard line with sex offenders, handing out seven life sentences over the month of October.

With this convictions for sexual related offences, KwaZulu-Natal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit will embark on its 16 Days of Activism campaign.

Major Thulani Zwane from SAPS said officers worked hard last month and arrested a total of 368 suspects for various sexual related crimes in the province including rape, assault, kidnapping and sexual assaults.

During the same month, they achieved 50 convictions, seven of which are life sentences and a total of 444 years imprisonment meted out to other accused for various sex crimes.

KwaZulu-Natal FCS Units investigated cases that were opened in all the areas in the province including, Durban suburbs, townships, rural areas, the South Coast and the North Coast.

“We will not stop to protect our children and women from the perpetrators. We will ensure that they are prosecuted and kept behind bars. The efforts by KwaZulu-Natal FCS to solve the cases is commended and we applaud their dedication to keep our children safe,” said Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, provincial police commissioner.
