Competition grows in leaps and bounds

The recent Passbook Competition for school children was a resounding success.

A FAREWELL tea was held at KwaMuhle Museum recently in honour of the winners of the eThekwini Local History Museums’ 2015 Passbook Competition.

Six talented high school learners and an educator from Durban won a trip to Bremen, Germany in the competition, and the winners travelled to Bremen the same day as the tea. The winners' announcement was made at the prize giving ceremony held at the Bergtheil Museum recently, and the winning participants represented eThekwini Municipality at the Night of the Youth Festival in Bremen.

From humble beginnings in 2013 the Passbook Competition has grown exponentially with the 2015 edition attracting 2 589 pupils from 42 schools within the eThekwini Municipality, signifying a growth of 72 per cent from last year’s 1 500 contestants.

Grade 4s submitted a poster, Grade 5s a recreation of a 3D artefact, Grades 6s and 7s entered a collage, Grades 8s and 9s a poem and Grades 10s and 11s submitted an essay. Learners with special education needs also participated in the competition. Submissions were of the highest quality and some were exhibited at the prize giving ceremony.

Winners in the primary school division were Taytum Shae Singarum (Grade 4), Aphiwe Ndlela (Grade 5), Nompilo Zikhali (Grade 6) and Siyamuthanda Shongwe (Grade 7). Winners in the high school division were Olwethu Mlangeni (Grade 8), Tusa Mngadi (Grade 9), Nonkululeko Shoba and Noluthando Sibiya (both Grade 10), Samkelisiwe Shezi and Nokukhanya Letaba (both Grade 11). The educator who won the trip to Bremen was Bhekithemba Dlamini of Bechet High School.

Ten educators were awarded Outstanding Educator Awards and Shaun Ndlovu and Xolane Zwane were the winners in the Learners with Special Education Needs Category. The 2016 edition of the competition is anticipated to attract wider participation.
