Sector Two meets to discuss crime

Berea police's SCF Sector two met last Thursday to discuss crime related awareness and precautions ahead of the busy festive season.

BEREA police’s SCF Sector two meeting was a successful gathering of like-minded individuals from SAPS, the community and security stakeholders.

Chairperson, Nicky Burke, outlined the various community based projects in the Sector which had made strides against crime in recent months. “All the security and community programmes have paid dividends. We also want to advise people not to show the criminal elements what you bought, so when you have recently purchased items, please don’t leave them on top of or near the bins, rather recycle. It is also important to take note of suspicious people to be able to give police and security companies a proper description for them to work with,” she advised.

Burke said more people were needed to be volunteers in the War Room initiative, where community, security companies work hand-in-hand with police.

“As police officers we are tasked with apprehending people who commit crimes in the environment we serve, however, having said this we have ignored the subtle criminal that lurks within. These subtle criminals I refer to are the ones that purchase from the perpetrators that do the crime. They create a market that allows criminals to continue terrorising the community in order to feed this demand for illegal or stolen items, be it for drugs or the purchase of a stolen item,” explained Sector two commander, Sergeant Trevor James.

James was confident that Berea police would not only apprehend these people who purchase from criminals, but destroy this market for stolen items and or drugs. “We need the community to work with the police and provide information when approached by someone who offers them anything that is illegal. Join your station Sector Crime Forums so that you can form a partnership with your police station and the members within. All information can be sent via these platforms if you wish to remain anonymous and want to create safe areas. Together we can win,” James said.
