UPDATE: No arrests for top cop murder

Funeral arrangements are in place for this coming Saturday at KwaNgcolosi.

THERE has been no arrests in the controversial murder case of Metro Police senior manager, Muzikayise Innocent Chamane.

Chamane was killed last Tuesday night at his home in KwaNgcolosi near Hillcrest and made headlines after it was reported that his family is fighting over his body.

The Highway Mail spoke to his older sister, Zanele Chamane, who said his brother (who was known as ‘Nci’) was her role model and she looked up to him.

“His fiancée called us when he was gunned down and I rushed to the scene, and his body was still lying there.

Zanele said there was an argument about the funeral. “Chamane had three children, and one out of the wedlock. The issue was that the children wanted to be part of the preparations and we were accused of being after his money.”

Zanele said they approached his lawyer to discuss a way forward.

“We did not wish to drag this to the courts, we have had a meeting as a family and the issue has been resolved, my brother will be buried this Saturday.” The family said Chamane knew that he was going to be killed.

“He did not say much on the matter, but he spoke to his fiancée briefly about his wishes regarding funeral arrangements prior to his death.

Yes, my brother did have enemies, but to me he was like a father, even to our children. We have really lost a pillar of this family.

Zanele said Chamane was the best brother ever who would liaise with and assist them if they required information.

“He was very knowledgeable and well educated, he liked his work and followed policies and protocols, which made him unpopular with his colleagues.”

According to the Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, it is alleged that Chamane (52) had just fetched his fiancée from work. “On his arrival at home, he noticed a suspicious person standing near the gate. He then went inside the yard after he had parked his car. He questioned the man.”

Manqele said Chamane was shot several times in the head, on the right arm and torso as he entered his lounge. Chamane was declared dead on the scene before paramedics arrived. A case of murder was opened at the Hillcrest Police Station.

“The case has now been moved to the SAPS Organised Crime Unit for investigation,” he said.

EThekwini Municipality sent condolences to the family of Chamane. The motive for the killing is still unknown.
