Seniors create pretty things for needy children

A total of 17 203 pretty things were collected for needy children in the Shoprite and Checkers campaign.

THE campaign, Pretty Things for Little Things, collected 17 203 unique, handmade items for needy children in 2015.

Sponsored by Shoprite and Checkers since 2003, Pretty Things for Little Things is run in conjunction with Age in Action. The campaign encourages customers, especially senior citizens, to put their creative talents to work to make clothes and toys for needy children.

Entrants could make anything practical, durable and safe fora child to wear or play with. Since its inception thirteen years ago, Pretty Things for Little Things has collected and distributed more than 145 000 handmade clothes, toys and blankets to needy children across South Africa.

While the project is open to all, senior citizens of 60 years and older who enter their handiwork stand a chance of winning vouchers that can be used at Shoprite, Checkers or Checkers Hyper stores nationwide. Three winners were selected per category in each province, and they received gift vouchers to the value of R2500, R2000 and R1500 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

The prize giving ceremony for KZN took place in Glenwood last week. Dawn Botha, (60), won first place in the soft toys category in KZN, Lydia van Rooyen, (60), won first prize for the blankets category, Cecilia van Niekerk, (77), won first place for the clothing categor. Jill Shanks came first in the ‘other’ category. A total of 715 items were collected from KZN.

A final judging round will take place, where the three national winners per category are chosen.
