High winds, seas force beach closures

Expected high winds and seas has forced the closure of Durban beaches this weekend and the removal of shark nets.

eTHEKWINI Municipality will close all Durban beaches this weekend due to expected high winds and seas as reported by the South African Weather forecasting stations.

Most Durban beaches were closed today, 30 October and will remain closed on Saturday, 31 October.

As a preventative measure to minimise the loss, damage or the potential threat of dislodged equipment becoming a public endangerment, a decision has been reached by the Boards Operations Department to remove the shark safety gear at the following beaches: Alkantstrand,  Blythedale, Thompsons Bay, Willards beach, Westbrook,  Umdloti, Umhlanga, Bronze beach as well as Durban beaches north of Casino Beach and Brighton Beach.

The City will advise when the beaches will open again and shark nets reinstated.
