Illicit cigarettes recovered

Four people were arrested for being in possession of illicit cigarettes last week.

MEMBERS from Cato Manor SAPS assisted by the Durban K9 Unit, arrested four suspects on the N2 close to Westwood Mall for possession of illicit cigarettes.

According to Major Thulani Zwane from SAPS, on 21 October, members from Cato Manor SAPS were on the N2 south bound when they spotted two suspicious vehicles. “The members called for backup and K9 members responded and the two vehicles were stopped and searched. Illicit cigarettes were recovered from both vehicles,” he said.

The suspects were taken to Cato Manor police station where they were charged for possession of illicit cigarettes with the estimated value of R40 000.

“This indicates that the police officials are not tolerating any illegal behaviour. It is hoped that this arrest will send a clear message that we will arrest all those who are smuggling illicit cigarettes to our province,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
